That takes me back. When I was a young teen,my dad's work sent him to Ethiopia and Kenya. We always flew (very well reputed)Ethiopian Airlines when possible.I noticed that marked difference in personality/philosophy/culture you mentioned in other ways, though. After a while it became comforting,to this day I miss it.Africans seem to have a better understanding of fate's inevitability. There was subsequently a refreshing lack of control freakdom. Most people never rushed for insignificant reasons.I guess outwardly it seemed like(only occasional) ineffeciency to uninitiated Western eyes.Soon though, that unspoken sense of connectedness, even to a white-as-humanly-possible foreigner like me,took over.Granted you might miss a connection or phone call.Inexplicably though, someone materialized to help. All told,I felt more secure and relaxed there than in somewhat officious Western countries with apparently different priorities.I haven't seen that sense of,erm, cohesiveness since.

I think you handled it all very well, men! I am from Cameroon and it is so interesting to read about all things Cameroonian from other perspectives. I am thinking of taking Air Cameroon from Douala to Johannesburg for a brief vacation when I visit Africa in December but after reading about your experience, I am going to give it more thought... Thanks for the heads up!
