No one has ever expressed in words so eloquently the deeply shamefull feeling that I experienced when I bought my first gas barbeque in America. The acid tears of shame sprang from my African eyes as I read your confession. Don't worry boet, you're not the only one, there are may of us who carry around the burded!

I've rationalized the decision as follows: When I cook on the gas barbeque, I only cook American barbeque food - burgers and horrogs. When I have a BRAAI, I break out the oil drum and braai some tjops and wors while I have a dop.

And now this all leads me to my question; does anyone have a design for a egte regte, brick n mortar Sefrican Braai that I can build in my suburban Connecticut back yard?

Hello there Folks, all the very best for 2009, to you and all the readers.... Had a real good laugh, we know EXACTLY what you mean about a 'regte egte BRAAI'... We have been in Christchurch NZ since 1996..... one of the very 1st things that I did was to make a braai, bent it up and welded it. Here they all use gas, ....my comment to them is..."... You might as well just pull the stove out in the garden and fry the meat in a pan..." I actually brought a new 'rooster' from Cape Town when I came over, so I was 1/2 way set up !!!! Then to find a descent wood,.... well lucky there is an indigenous wood call 'Manuka', almost like the Australian Tea Tree, looks a lot like the SA Myrtle.... So we were set, we did our 1st braai in NZ, even invited Kiwi friends, they loved it, so there are so many 'converts', but still none want to commit, shame !!!!! Just too much work for them, even though they say that a gas BBQ can NEVER taste like a BRAAI.... Sorry, I just can't lower myself to a 'gas job'..... OK then, keep well and 'Braai is tops'.... Cheers for now.... Keith

I love the way you write! How you build the tension and anticipation, how you make it sound like you could be talking of two or more things, the reader is free to go down any road he fancies, until you bring him to the truth of the treason!

A gas BBQ? Ouch! I have some South African pals in Dubai and I know how big they are on the braai, done in the traditional way! :)

I learned a lot about braai from reading this.

I also can relate to what you are saying. During my childhood times, we qued in the backyard. Our grill was a hole dug in the ground to hold wood or charcoal (if someone went and purchased some). Our actual grill was made of red bricks that we stacked up and around the hole. The racks that they used were from the second hand store.

We did this for years. Even though grills were available. Finally my grandparents and mom broke away from tradition and purchased grills. It was like a whole new world of out door cooking opened up in our lives.

This is a good post. I enjoyed reading it.

@Saffer - Sorry dude. Just did burgers this weekend.

@Keven Bennett - Okay. Then it's barbeque at your place when I come and visit!
