You're quite right about what it is that we miss. Fortunately, ex-pats in Canada figured that out a long time ago and now I can find Chocolate Logs, Mrs. Balls Chutney, Safari dried fruit, rusks, Lemon Creams, biltong, droe wors etc. right here in my neighbourhood. (and as Colin said above, I can do it safely.)

I live in Dubai, and one of our local supermarkets here, Spinneys, has a lot of Saffers working there, and they have a lot of home brands. We get Ceres, and Robertson's spices, and miesies Balls, and Marmite, and Iwisa. And crappy boerewors and even more crappy biltong. But some things, like peppermint crisp, when we get them, are incredibly expensive. 2 weeks ago I bought a Chocolate log, medium size, for the equivelant of around R14! Ag jirre tog, but when you're homesick, you want food, quite right. The only thing worse than not getting home food, is getting crappy home food. When we had the Dubai 7s in December, I was looking forward to a nice boerewors roll. But the bloody thing they sold me, for around R22, if I remember correctly, didn't have miesies balls on it, just some sad, fried onion and a skinny piece of wors. I nearly wept! You'd think it was made by a soutie. I know I should have told the guy what I thought of it, but oh no I didn't. Te ordentelik, you know.

@Kwagga - nah, mate. Left in 2002. Check out my earlier posts. And Windhoek is way to German and Namibian for my less than impecable taste. Note: I didn't say we have good taste in South Africa! Also, Castle still hasa 98% marketshare... Budweiser - now that is real crap.
