For those who don’t believe in evolution – stop reading. No wait! It actually doesn’t matter. My question will stay the same. Whether you do it in the name of God. Or Allah. Or Yourselfishness. Or the Big Emptiness. Or communism. Or the Dalai Lama. Or Ganesha. Or the dog down the road. It doesn’t matter. The question stays the same.
What are we doing?
Do you know what a privilege it is to be here on earth? Think about it. You are so damn lucky. Think about how you somehow managed to pick the one little ball of rock that can sustain life. Billions of years ago. A Big Bang. It took a few billion years for enough dust particles to stick together. And eventually form earth. A few lost comets and debris crashing into this little ball provided the stuff needed to start good old earth. Water. H and little bit of O. And… And the other stuff like hum… metals and chemicals needed to eventually hang around to build this blue looking rock hanging out in space. And it started swinging. Swinging away around the sun. A touch of atmosphere. And it gets to grips with itself – gravity. And it stays just far enough and close enough from the sun to maybe sustain life.
And it did. Life came to earth. Think back to what it took to get you here. After a few more years. A billion plus. Something stirred. From deep inside… hum… somewhere. And life was born. Not much of a life. Not as we know it. But it stirred. And eventually formed some algae. That at bloody last turned into something with eyes and fins. Got sick and tired of staying in the water the whole time and eventually crawled out. From there it was a hop, skip and a jump to monkey and then man. What a ride.
Think about it. Your ancestors. From the algae that didn’t get burned. To that thing in the water that didn’t get eaten by our early cousin the shark. Crawled unto land and somehow managed to make it. Not get squashed by big old Apatosaurus. Hid from the saber-toothed tiger while hanging out in the trees. Dodged bullets during wars. Each and every single day. For billions of years. Your ancestors got the lucky breaks. Always at the right place at the right time. Never got caught flatfooted. Never choked on a banana or a flea picked from our less lucky uncle Earl. Remember him? He “invented” the spear by accident. But it got stuck in his head. In on the one side and out the other side. He didn’t make it. No. Our ancestors always got away. For billions of years. And here you are. Drum roll please. Ta da!
We are damn, damn lucky. It took so much effort just to get us here. All the breaks you could ask for – we got it. Talk about being privileged. Talk about knowing the right people. Having the right genes. And here we are. So what are we doing? What are we doing?
What are we doing with our lucky break?
We sit in front of the idiot box and watch stupid stories of murder or love or “reality”. We drive our big fat cars to fit our big fat ego’s. We eat hormone induced meat because we can’t bother to hunt or even know where our food comes from. We sit in our air-conditioned offices and watch the world go by. All the time trying to sell something. To make more money. Selling ourselves. Selling our souls. Selling lies. And we go home and have no time for those we leave behind. We don’t look at them and show them how to make sure we stay lucky. How we can make this little rock last a little bit longer. To make those who will come after us have a chance the way we got our chance. And that’s the good part.
We fight wars. We kill in the name of whatever. Or Whatever. But in truth we murder and kill in our own name. It’s us. Not Him. Or Her. Or It. We seek war before we put out our hand in friendship. We will rather fight than try to live. We breed hate before we nurture love. Kill before caring. We would step on that algae that made us before we nurture it to life. Thank god Mother Earth does not have our temperament. She doesn’t care. She just does. We care. We care about us. And not others.
We gather things. Things we don’t need. We live for greed. We stuff our faces and then send the rest down the drain. Garbage disposal. We don’t share with those who might need it more. We don’t think that the scraps on our table that gets thrown away can feed a family that comes from our less lucky uncle Earl. And we live for the need for more. More money. More houses. More cars. A better phone. An iPhone. A better laptop. Better cable. Virtual life on the net. Tweeting on Twitter. It’s us, us, us. More, more, more. We just do what is good for us. And not others.
And then we blame. We blame the others when we can’t look in the mirror. When we are so addicted to our lives, but not to life. Addicted to wanting more. And war. And the lies we tell ourselves and to others to make it okay. Okay for ourselves. Because we can’t look in the mirror. What are we doing?
Why can’t we evolve? Move forward. Laugh at uncle Earl? Not be like cousin shark. Be a little more in it together?
Why don’t we do our best to make this little world better? To care a little bit more? Why don’t we look after each other? Why don’t we stop the killing? And the dying? And the hunger? Why don’t we know that we are all the same? In the same boat. That it doesn’t matter where you live. Or what you believe. Because, in the end, all we have while we are here and before we die is us. Just us. And our little rock. Why don’t we know that war and hate and blame and greed and… don’t solve problems? That love and friendship and life and caring and sharing and… and… That these are the things that we can leave behind. The lessons to help those who come after us. Because what we leave behind is what will define tomorrow. When we are the ancestors. When our descendants will look back and laugh at how funny we looked. Like Grandpa Algae.
We are lucky. Always have been. And even luckier that we can’t see the future. And that our ancestors can’t see us today. What would they think? What would they ask? Papa Algae won’t be impressed.
What are we doing?

The world is a puzzling place. The answers aren’t that easy to get. And the questions don’t get any easier. But it doesn’t mean we can’t keep on looking and asking. Sometimes I look in the mirror and stare at myself and this little world of ours. And then I write. You can find more of these thoughts at a page I created that captures links to all of these stories in one place. Go to the ”What Are We Doing?” page for these stories. No, it won’t bring you back to this post – it is a seperate page.
Someone read this and decided to start a Facebook Group Page that they hope will inspire people to look at our world and each other in a different and more positive way. Feel free to join if you already belong to Facebook.

It is true there are many people that are clueless consumers of all the planet has to offer.
There are also many wonderful people who take the time, effort and energy to help stimulate our awareness of the fragility, beauty and lessons of mother Earth and all her family.
The real trick is in realizing it doesn’t take a Herculean effort to make change – just time. If we all move a single grain of sand, eventually the entire dune shifts.
Be well; be warmed by the notion that you raise your own children to do better.
July 16, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Hey , I hope you’re okay.
You’re right, we’re really lucky but we’re too pig headed to acknowledge it. I’m not so sure about Papa Algae but I think Mother Nature is kind of fed up with us. Maybe she’s trying to drown us to save us from ourselves or at least mitigate the damage we’re doing.
July 19, 2008 at 2:48 am
Shit!
After all, we did pick our way through mass extinctions 715, 630, 580, 543, 440, 365, 251, 200, 93, and 65 million years ago.
That is one hell of a lot of mass extinctions to get through just to blow ourselves up now.
Not only that, we’ve been baked in a CO2 induced hell immediately after having our beutiful blue home frozen solid from pole to pole at least three times, blasted by rocks from space twice, toasted by eruptions big enough to cover the entire surface of the United States on five different occasions, poisoned by methane, radiated by full-spectrum UV, drowned, starved, gassed and eaten by small animals.
And now we would undo it all?
Actually, maybe Papa Algae will be relieved after the failure of his first attempt to father intelligent life and find a better way next time…

Wow, hats off one of the best things I have read to date! *bows*

We are too busy being all about ME that we can’t see our luck and the grace God gives us. Our Chanel Sunglasses wont allow us to see that – past our need to have them. We are weighted down by our Gucci handbags, and our Iphones, and all of those MUST HAVE items to notice the suffering of anyone else because we are suffering not to have every single thing we desire.
I sigh at our world. I have come to the point where I have looked to surround myself with like minded spirits who remind me that I am not alone in my thinking and that there is hope out there. There are those of us who appreciate the gifts we were given. By God, or the dog down the street, the fuzz in our belly buttons… whomever or whatever…
But of course, nothing is limitless or endless. Nothing is given without cost somewhere. Some people are willing to pay for others in this world. I feel like there will be alot more souls sacrificed before the rest of them wake up to what is real and important.
July 21, 2008 at 8:52 am
@Sahlah – So true. It’s just time we need to offer. And that we are not alone.
@Coffeewalah – I’m fine, thanks for asking. Sometimes it gets a bit much though. But the down bits don’t last long! Too much work to do.
@KevenB – Well, I should actually let you write this piece. You know our history so much better. Both in what you do and in your passion. Maybe the only intelligent life out there!
@SanityFound – Wow! That is a huge compliment. Thank you so much! I almost deleted it as I thought it might be a bit much. Really good to know someone like you found it worthwhile.
@Amber – So right. The “me” in our society today. I think very few of us will make it if we had to try and live a few hundred years ago. In the meantime, a few people (like yourself) have to clean up after the rest of society.

Your are 100% right, people now a days take the eath for granted. We take and yet do not give. Then people still hurt each other…coming from a mixed race family, I cannot tell you how hurt I am that this is still going on. NO MATTER what nationality you are, race, religion, gender or sexual orientation, we should ALL treat each other as brothers and sisters, treat everyone one respect…so what if someone cut in from of you while driving. Annoying yes, but let it go. We are all from the same flesh and blood, time to get with the times and begin to love. You cannot fight HATE with HATE! Nor should you fight at all. Thanks for writing this, I joined your fb!!

You have some valid points, however, I doubt very much that God in his infinite wisdom created only , “…..one ball of rock that sustains life.” There are many ways to change what we are doing and I’ve found one that works every time, is to walk everywhere you go with a smile on your face. Smile at the people who pass you by. It’s amazing to see the different reactions; some smile back, some say a friendly, ” hello,” some look at you like you’ve lost your mind and others just ignore your silent but powerful gesture. The energy you put out in this simple action is not wasted on anyone, but rather starts a chain reaction that reaches farther than you could ever imagine. Likewise, random acts of kindness have the same effect. skin-colour, race, religion, financial/social status are irrelevant in the eyes of God. Jesus came to teach us how to treat each other; don’t you think it’s time we followed his example? In the Christian faith , Jesus’ spirit lives inside of each believer and when this happens, you look at the world with love and compassion. I challenge all of you to start today.
August 6, 2008 at 10:34 am
Linda your doubts regarding that God only made one ball of light are understandable, however it is unwise to assume otherwise. Yes, there could be other Earth like planets out there, but it would be foolish to base our lifestyle and choices on that. This planet, for the time being, is the only ball of rock that can sustain US.
A great supplement to this wonderful and powerful blog entry is the Pale Blue Dot video. Great work, angryafrican. I imagine you will enjoy this video immensely

@Hans – Yes, people only hear what they want to hear. And block off anything else. But hopefully someone will listen if we keep on chipping away. Take this piece I wrote. Nathan took it to another level. I just wrote it. Now it has been seen by so many people thanks to him.
@Tanya – Thanks for the kind words! Feel free to use it. I am honored.
@Kat Grant – You are right. No matter where we come from. It doesn’t matter. We are different, but still the same. Less hate. More love. More action.
@Linda – You are right. It is unlikely that we are the only life in the universe. But it is the only planet we know. But, you are right. It is easy to just start with a smile when we didn’t smile before. It is easier than what we think.
@Aiber – I agree. This is the nly planet we live on. we make the difference. And thanks for the link!
@Michelle – Mmm. Have a look at your inbox. But keep it between us okay?
@Favio Iraola – Thank you. It is about what we do. Just simple actions. And thanks for the kind words.
@Andrea – Of course! A huge honor. More than happy to help where I can. But I hardly have any command of the English language!

What are we doing?
Living and surviving. That’s what.
I don’t mean to be cynical, but Mother Nature doesn’t give a rat’s hindside what we do, individually or collectively. The world will endure long after we have gone. It doesn’t depend on us for it’s well-being. The Earth is an amazing, self-regulating organism. Carbon emissions, litter, Chloro-whatevers mean nothing. Atomic-, hydrogen- neutron-bombs? Bring ‘em. She’s seen it, done it and survived it before. More than once.
I appreciate your blog and you are definitely working thoughtfully through some issues. But to all the readers: What are you going to do? Being inspired is great but how will you apply that enthusiasm? Starting a facebook group? To what end? So hundreds and perhaps thousands of people who already share the same anxiety can get together and collectively bemoan the current state of affairs?
What will you do? March in the street? Write letters? Educate? Will you write legislation? Lobby constiuents and stakeholders? Boycott products that do not meet standards? Whose standards? Will you grow your own food? Make your own clothes?
Do something or do nothing. But the fact is you are doing it for your own good. And perhaps for the benefit of your offspring. But don’t posture some wild platitude about “saving the planet.” No one, not even all of us together can save the planet. It doesn’t need saving.
As for “being lucky” and owing something to Papa Algae or Uncle Earl? Perhaps there is something called luck. But that view is myopic, it’s based on thinking that leads to you from heat and dust, hell!, from the big bang itself. Look at the wider view and God’s plan unfolds. Nature works on a scale that is nearly incomprehensible. Creatures come and go. Mountains, land masses, oceans rise and fall, are created and disappear. We survive or we don’t. Luck is a numbers game and we who inhabit this planet (and I really think by “lucky” you are referring to the very small percentage who are forunate enough to live in a first-world nation) do so at the caprice of nature and circumstance, not fortune.
Why wouldn’t Pap Algae be impressed? Why shouldn’t I wish to be like cousin Shark? I want to survive. I want my children to do better than me. I want them to thrive. I desire innovations that make my work day easier, allow me more time to explore art and science and creation and discovery. But that creation and expansion comes at a great cost. And often at the expense of someone else’s comfort or well-being.
What are you willing to give up?
What are you willing to do?
Then do it.
August 9, 2008 at 6:46 am
Thank you for this wonderful text…
It feels so good that people all over the planet are “awakening” more and more and so fast lately…
Things are moving… and even if there are still people like the previous post (that motivated me not to leave this thread end up with such sad comments), many others are reacting… are feeling that things are not right the way they are… that we are so going at full speed towards our own end and that it is time to react in a more efficient way than to just save our own skin and potentially our children’s.
People seem at last to understand that we did make some wrong choice along the way and are trying to change… and that NO, indeed, we just can’t go on thinking only to save our individual skins and that’s exactly by not doing things for our own good anymore at last, but to start thinking more broadly, more efficiently, more satisfyingly that we’ll manage this time… It’s way too late and just obviously technically and scientifically not possible to make a difference now by simply being selfish, arrogant and aggressive….
We had centuries to check and recheck that that way of doing things doesn’t work and doesn’t make us happy in the end!
Our path of evolution is unity… we know it deep down but are too used to ignore it by now, especially when forceful people try to divide us … but it’s coming back big time…
In any case, even those who still believe in selfishness know, feel, deep down, that whatever they do, they just can’t feel happy at the end of the day… like no matter what they achieve, get, buy, steal or whatever, they just can’t manage to be fully happy, serene and satisfied…
We all know it… we have all seen that rich and powerful people are just not happier than people who “have nothing”… far from it…
When a selfish person get what he/she wants, he/she always knows at the end that that thing is just empty and he/she then wants something else and, when realizing finally (that always comes eventually) that he/she will always need something else and cannot be happy that way, his/her world crumble… through depression, health problems or whatever….
But, more and more people have understood that at last… and are changing and their changing is changing the world around them…. Science has already started to study these strange phenomena of the “magical” spread of habits and ways of thinking (it’s called morphogenic fields and that can go fast).
This awareness that we cannot manage to reach true happiness the way we live now is what will save humanity…or not if things don’t change quickly enough but at least WE would have finally understood and tried…
So, despite the feeling that some people still don’t get it, we must have faith or simply go on living “properly” and believe in the end of selfishness and self-centredness… we don’t have a choice anyway; I’d rather see the end of our world while knowing I tried to save it than be there at the end knowing that it’s partly because of being selfish that we didn’t make it this time…
Because, yes, the Earth has survived many changes but when the Dinosaurs died it wasn’t their fault….
I do not want to be part of a species that ruined their habitat knowingly and died from it…. Way too damn stupid for a species that think so highly of itself!!
August 10, 2008 at 4:20 am
Original JJ, with all due respect, surely you’re not so deluded as to think that after everything we do to it, our planet is safe and sound any longer. Maybe we won’t be the cause of the literal ‘destruction’ of this piece of rock, but we’re well on our way to extinction.
I know this doesn’t apply to everybody, but consuming much more than what we need, and wasting incredible amounts of energy and fuel is not called ‘survival’, it’s called ‘mindless indulgence’.
I don’t think Angry African is asking us to do any of these things you mentioned, and while you may laugh at the initiative of opening a Facebook group, that person at least did SOMETHING. Inspiration does change the world, we just don’t always know about the full extent of it. Angry African is just asking us to stop once and think about what we’ve done, and I think s/he’s simply asking us to share and care a bit more. What’s wrong in wanting to be a shark? It’s because if we were all sharks, there would be none of us left to live tomorrow.
True, we do work for our own benefits. But there are also countless examples of selfless people who did a whole lot more. I’m not asking us to be selfless. It’s a fact that all our benefits are connected to each other, and it’s high time we realize it. Live, but let live too. And let’s not just keep asking “What can we do?”…the real question is, “What can’t we do?”
If we, the lucky people grew from Grandpa Algae and created this huge civilization, are you telling me that we can’t figure out a way to make it go the right way?
August 10, 2008 at 11:07 am
@k2sc1 – Thanks! It is a real honor that you found something in my words. And thank you so much for the link and discussion. It really isn’t about me so I don’t mind what people do with it. I just had the time to write it.
@Original JJ – That’s what I asked. What are we doing? We can do nothing and enjoy life or we can do something and enjoy life. I do think it is a falacy that we have to give something up. Yes, we over consumer, but we don’t give anything up by doing something about our little world. I think we gain more. The problem is that we believe in this world where others (tv, news, magazines, music etc) tell us what will make us happy instead of looking at ourselves.
@FrenchPeg – That is it hey? We are the only group that can kill our world before something else does it for us. Or we can try and make it better. Like you say, we are not dinosaurs. We make the difference. Good or bad.
@Platalet – Thank you so much for that. I try not to be defensive. And I try not to justify why I wrote it. People can read the “About AA” part to see if I do anything to try and make it better or not. But I do find it funny that people will attack the piece on little details instead of trying to answer the question. Must be politicians at heart. Do everything but answer the question. Thanks for seeing it for what it is. Just a question about our legacy and our life.
August 12, 2008 at 7:15 am
Nice story, I totally agree with you, but life sucks and you can’t do anything about this. It will always be dark and good side and your point is good, but you can’t convince all 5-6 billion people. It will always be someone evil.
And in our nature is to be selfish…
Some things will never change, no matter how hard you try to change them. That sucks, I know, but that’s reality!

I don’t like the way you targeted this at everyone, some people donate money to charities once a month ect. I doubt you don’t have a job, sit in front of the tv, want the newest and best things? Some people are living better than others, and even though it’s sad, but can you imagine a world where everyones equal? No ones richer than anyone else, everyone gets the same amount of everything, no ones stronger than anyone else can you imagine that? It might be what you want now but you would realize how boring it would be after the first few days without people being better than others our social structure would collapse. Why have a president when everyone else could be one? Why should I have a sales position when I should be a CEO, I’ve got the same skills as the CEO why can’t I be him?
Why go to the movies when you have the same acting skills as them?
Why buy a cd when I can sing exactly the same?
Even though this will never happen, if people in third world countries had the same amount of income an average American family gets, it would sure as hell help them alot but that can’t happen due to overpopulation, less jobs, and low resources.
So stop blaming it on all of us as It’s not our fault even though we waste our lives watching tv remember that time enjoyed wasting is not wasted.
If you really wanted to you can freeze your leftovers and send them to Africa

I saw this when I joined the Facebook group and then googled it to find the whole blog.
It is a really meaningful piece, with well placed illustrations, and it hit on several points I had in my mind but couldn’t have phrased as well as here.
October 14, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Ok. I disagree with the fact of evolution!!! I believe that God made every single thing on this earth and that there is no such thing as evolution…he didn’t make one organism and let that organism evlove into every animal on earth. I highly doubt that we “evolved” from a fish. You guys can believe what you want to but evolution to me is NOT true. I agree this blog is well written but it is not true to my eyes!!!
October 14, 2008 at 5:18 pm
@Andreas – I am sorry if you misread what I meant. I never meant that people are of equal monetary value. Or that we want the same things. Or that people will do equal things. All I am asking is What Are You Doing? In all honesty, I know I do more than most. But that is because I can and because I work in an area where it allows me to do more. I don’t agree with you on why Africa and other developing nations are struggling – overpopulation, less jobs and resources. Less jobs – yes. But overpopulation? That is in the eye of the beholder. Would you say China is overpopulated? Or New York for that matter. The level of development is too low and not because of overpopulation. In some places yes, but in most places not. It’s a simple question – not whose fault it is or what’s the reason or should everyone be the same. Firstly, with everything that you have… What Are You Doing?
@Emma Rose – Thank you for the kind words. And thank you for seeing it for what it is. Just a piece about something that bothers me. Not meant to be an instruction or deeper meaning of evolution as some people might read. Just a question.
@kate – You don’t have to agree with me on evolution. Heck, I think I made some serious mistakes on evolution in the piece in any case. But tell me, if you are from God and believe in God – What are you doing? Do you speak out against war? Do you pray for other to seek peace instead? Do you feed people like God told us? Do you treat everyone with equal respect and not judge them for thinking differently from you – like God taught us? The 10 Commandments are pretty straight forward. And the Bible is about love. But why do we see so much war? The point is. You don’t have to agree with evolution to ask the question. Arguing the evolution point is a distraction from the bigger question. I don’t think God is going to ask me whether I believe in evolution or not. He might, but I am sure he won’t ask me about that first. He’ll most likely go through those 10… Peace, love, sharing etc.
October 16, 2008 at 1:53 pm
I agree with you, but we need to stop it. People doesn’t look for a way to change, the way has to get to them. At my school we made it. A couple of students dreamed a way to help people. When they got some resurces and the needed permission they started. It’s a group of students and doctors that visit comunities with limitwd resurces and give them free medical care, food and talks about sex education, violence, nutrition and some psicological care. It’s an awesome way to care for others and a way to help those who need it. I’m from Mexico, my country needs a lot.
This group started with four people who wanted to help. This is just it second year and we have almost 150 students and we hope that this year the crew grews. You can help other, but you need to star now, you don’t know how many people will love to help you, and you’re not just helping others. You help yourself as well.

The earth has two ways of solving problems: undo, and delete.
“Undo” is what the human race needs to help the earth do, reverse the effects of our existence and hope that the tantrum-prone earth doesn’t hit delete.
However, if the earth has already “decided” that our existence will ALWAYS be a large threat, it will wipe us out completely, no matter what we do.
The things humans do are necessary for our purpose, the code that nature puts in our mind, giving us one task: survive.
The war, the killing, it will always go on. At least as long as humans exist.
And caring about only ourselves isn’t all true. Everyone cares about at least one other person other than themselves. And in all honesty, focusing on yourself first rather than others isn’t all that bad either. I mean, if you don’t take care of your own needs, you’re in no condition to care for ANYONE.
