Actually, they won’t say that. Maybe behind closed doors somewhere. But even then they won’t use the word African. No they’ll use something much more harsh than that. They’ll tell public jokes about people from Pakistan or Poland, but they’ll stay away from Africans. Ever wondered why?
Maybe because they have raped and pillaged Africa so much that there is no joke left for them to tell. Not without feeling guilty. It’s easy to tell jokes about people that are down and less fortunate than you. But it is more difficult to tell a joke about people that you messed up so badly. Where you drew the borders with a ruler and a dice. Hey, it was a half a century ago, but it takes the fun away when you see your handiwork in the news every single day.
But even those outside Europe don’t tell jokes about Africans. But they don’t do it because of their history of exploitation. No. They do it because of what they are still doing today. Want a trade deal? We got one for you. Okay, it’s not what you want, but it’s all you gonna get. Want some help with economic development? No problem. Just sign on the dotted line and take all the strings that’s attached. Want to deal with a health crisis? No problem. Here take these pills, but pay up and break your neck if you want the stuff that will really help. No fun telling jokes about Africans now is it? Not when what you do is no joke. It kills people.
There is another reason why they don’t tell jokes about Africans. Racism. Plain old vanilla flavored racism. It is difficult to tell jokes when you know you discriminate against people from Africa. Because you can’t laugh out loud when your conscious drowns out the laughter with its screaming. And the tears of laughter gets replaced by tears of sorrow when you are reminded of that kid you saw on the Save The Children poster. No fun now is it?
Oh, they’ll hide that racism away. And hide behind their politically correct walls. But we know better. We see it in their eyes when they can’t look at us for too long. Or the condescending voice they use when describing how much they love Africa. A good friend of mine described it in the perfect way – the “snobbery and veiled superiority of the Brits”. (Don’t worry John, I won’t give away your identity, but those were beautiful words. I just had to use it.) They don’t believe that they are better. No never, not them. They know they are better. And it is so subtle. It’s just the slight tilt of their head, the slow knowing nod of the head, the soft voice almost whispering, their chin resting on their folded hands as if in prayer, and the way they sigh in a caring way when they talk about the people of Africa and the suffering. But we know. Oh yes, we know.
They’ll let in everyone with a white skin (or money). You’re from Poland? No problem. Come on in. America? Welcome to London. South Africa? Sorry, you were okay before, but you know now that you have a black government running the country we are experiencing all these problems with visas. It was okay way back then when you only came over to visit and spend your money, but now you want to work here as well? Really, that is just too much. Give an African a finger and he’ll take the middle one. Yes, South Africa has at last become like almost all other African countries. We can now call ourselves true Africans. We have passed the last hurdle. The UK will charge our people just enough money for visas to keep the majority of black South Africans at home. Welcome home South Africa, welcome home.
But the joke is on them. Those borders they drew never kept us in. Or out for that matter. We are not some animal you can cage. We will explore the world like we always have. Move around and find a nice little place to hang out. Hey, you can thank your lucky stars that we have this eagerness to explore. A couple of us got sick and tired of hanging around hunting in this bloody heat and decided to go north for a bit. Just a winter break. And decided to stay for a while. We gave you life. And a few thousand years later those same bastards came back with white skins and a gun. Jeez umlungu, what happened to you? You leave for a few days and come back looking like this? Go wash yourself. You look ridiculous.
Hey, gotta run. Want to see the Cullinan Diamond in London before I need a visa. Oh yes, that was one of ours before as well. After London? Who knows. I hear Switzerland still takes us. Just a shame about all the Swiss. Have I ever told you the joke about the Swiss?

yep, I know some Ethiopian jokes too.
Europeans f’ed most all their former colonies. right?
Nice short post! My ADD kicks in on those previous posts and I end up not reading them.

Complicated story isn’t it – it is true the visa fee is enough to stop most poorer people from legally obtaining that entry to Britain – it is not nearly enough to stop the scum that deals in human trafficking.
Border protection is always a touchy matter. I read all the linked stories and it appears that SA passports are easily obtained in back channels. That’s not good either.
Is your objection based on race or a change in the historical situation with Britain?
Just for fun this is a link to all the countries US citizens have to obtain a visa to visit. Personally the very last bit seemed a touch ironic, no visa required for Zimbabwe, but it will be granted on arrival. Yeah I bet…

Come on now ouboet! I mean put yourselves in them British boots, your economy is shot, you don’t have much to offer as country, the whole thing is quickly becoming a circus, why would you not charge an entry fee? I must confess to knowing one or two nice Britons though, you know nice in a sort of a bonkable way, if you know what I mean ol’chap. Take that woman in “Love Actually” but then again she may be African actually – oh bollocks . . .

Yea, one of those young silly americans here. I have trouble following the implied history here.
So my thought is there is a problem, how do you fix it.
No money with strings, leaves money without strings. ( I think I have a right to be afraid of that) How will my taxpayer money be spent? Will it go to the local Saddam Hussain in Zimbabwe, if we choose to prop up a Saddam who looks like a good guy but isn’t, isn’t that the same mistake we made in Iraq. We propped up a guy in Iran and the country tore him and us a new hole in our hide and now threatens Iseral with nukes. In other words I am sick of messing around with others politics to make things better when they only get worse. I think Africa is better off with out our aid since our “aid” in the middle east went so well. Afgainistan just turned out perfect (not). I was a supporter of that war but we fight the communists to prop up the tailban, to fight the tailiban. only to turn around and fight in Iraq because we wanted to pressure Iran because way back when the British decided that the governments should be such and such a way in WW2 because we were fighting the Nazis. Yuck.
You have a solution better then no aid at all?
Aid without strings, cause that last time I checked I thought those strings being negotiated by our state department was to prevent another middle east. Maybe I am delusional to think our government could get something right once and a while. I not ranting at you AA. I just don’t see how anything other then shipping food helps, in fact that got us into trouble in somailia. We were there to feed them!
So I ask this honestly what is the solution when everything we do to help seems to hurt? Send food and money, don’t send food and money? Is welfare going to destroy them slowly, should we do workfare? Opps there is a string attached.
If you mention a government program, I shout in frustration and just not come back. I trust them about as much as I trust the UN. Did I ever tell you about the UN. I see them as money wasters and rapists. I don’t veiw a lot of people in the US government as a lot better. Well I don’t recall them rapeing anyone. I apoligize we haven’t sunk that low.
I going to tell you the truth I haven’t the foggest how to help the middle east and Africa the best. We have a responsiblity to help, but wouldn’t leaving well enough alone prevent another war? I see the middle east and Affrica as the same story. Big country comes in invades, brings improvements and rubs locals face in the dirt. How do you solve that? by arming the locals, that didn’t work so well in Afgainistan? what do you suggest when everything we touch in those regeions do no good.
Or are we doing good by helping there but since no one thanks us for meddleing we the average american doesn’t see it. I have no idea how much money flows to affica out of the US citezens privite coffers. I do know this our money just was monitized, which means soon we just might be going down. I am all for leaveing just well enough alone. We are tapped out, our government can’t barrow anymore money to give out, our debt is higher then the worlds GDP.
They only way I see out of this is for me and millions of others to go back to basics write a list of 12 values and the pricaples they are based on and see if we can’t impove ourselves and then reach out a helping hand to lift others.

AA:
I’m not sure if this is the best place to post this, but Desmond Tutu made some very interesting, and in my opinion, accurate assessment of how Obama might fare in the rest of the world:

In addition, it includes some damning commentary on our recently extinct (good riddance!) administration.

I was thinking the other day about Africans living outside of the Motherland.
In my community we have a large population of Africans who have immigrated into the city. I have learned through my work to have a great respect for people who leave one country and enter into another.
There are major barriers to overcome that hardly anyone thinks about. The language, culture and customs are definitely different.
It occurred to me that Black people are not welcomed in many nations anymore. For us France was the refuge country at one time.
But that seems to have changed over the years.
I have never been overtly interested in the British. Perhaps it is due to the fact that I see their ancestors as one of the major oppressive people of the world. I can only imagine what difficulties Africans face in the UK. Hell, I get angry when I see the treatment that Africans receive in America.
Interesting post. There are no easy solutions to these types of problems.

love this post! Read it once a month and I’m ALWAYS intrigued at your insight!
Try an African leaving in the Middle East boet! The discrimination is subtle but overt?? Oppressed masses counter-oppressing one enother. A mess.
“aid” is no solution. “no aid” is no solution either.
Here’s my belief…there is enough in the world for all of us to survive and thrive. We just have not found the balance because of our selfish motivations.
Keep writing

You couldn’t complicate things any more if you tried AA. You have simplisticly implied that the current UK Visa restrictions are due to inherent racism by the Brits 9and the rest of the world?). Wow….didn’t realise how ignorant you are, or how easily you are able to shift blame to others – much like your beloved ANC has done. Zero accountability and a 100% blame culture. A little insight on the Visa restrictions – a few factors come into play;
Does anyone realise how many Middle Eastern citizens have been arrested in UK airports as suspected terrorists (or at least are on the CIA and MI5 watchlist as threats), carrying SOUTH AFRICAN passports??
Does anyone realise how many people within the SA Home Affairs department have been arrested due to croruption (i.e. issuing fake passports)?
Did anyone not exepect the tightening of borders anyway, due to rising unemployment in many 1st world countries – fueled by the financial crisis?
Now…AA…pls tell me again why SA has VISA restrictions?? Or should Britain (and possibly other countries) just accept an influx of terrorists arriving on fake passports issued wholesale by SA’s corrupt home affairs department???
Oh wait….it’s just racism…my mistake…LOL!!
