You bring up a point near-and-dear to my heart. I have long felt that much of philanthropy in the US (perhaps the West as a whole) has been too paternalistic, too focused on assuging guilt. I remember back when Episcopal World Relief became Episcopal Relief and Development. I was delighted, since I had been wondering how we could break the cycles of poverty and need, not simply respond to these recurring flare-ups.

You make a very good point here. I actually am very bad at charities. I gave some money to a autism centre once and I to the SPCA on another occasion.

I would love to get involved more but there is always the excuse of, I have no time…

Thanks again AA. Right on the money. I am about to read a book called Dead Aid. Not sure that agree but I know one thing for sure that Aid with conditions, conditions that insist that the receiver be more like the giver, DON’T WORK, except perhaps to soothe the soul of the giver into believing that they did the best they could. It’s not enough. So thanks again.
Not even remotely offended and I don’t lean quite as whole heartedly to the left as you, though I suspect as I age, that any rightish thoughts I may have will disappear with my youthful optimism.
