You tell her that people are small and scared of change, that sometimes they hide behind their righteousness and narrow-mindedness because it feels safe and easy. That for some people the idea of a world filled with difference is overwhelming and either/or feels safe and doesn’t make them have to think too deeply.
You tell her that most people are good – and are trying to do the right thing – but that we have to keep talking and talking and talking to help everyone figure out what the right thing is.
You tell her the truth – that there are some people who are just mean and cruel – but that they are fewer and farther between than the media would have us believe and that she can’t get discouraged or let the hope die.
You tell her to surround herself with people who know that love is never wrong and that will carry her through. You tell her that no matter who she is or what she does, you love her.

And you tell her that it isn’t really cliche to think that even if she can’t change the world, she can change the world around her.

But you know – she probably already understands some of this – you live it and she’s watching.
